Opportunities for Individuals from Diverse Backgrounds through CEC's Caucuses

CEC hosts several caucuses, each of which addresses different aspects of diversity. These unofficial bodies make recommendations to CEC on various issues concerning their constituencies. They are:

American Indian Caucus
The CEC American Indian Caucus is a network of pre-service students, educators and other advocates interested in advancing the education of American Indian children with disabilities and supporting the professional advancement of American Indian special educators. The American Indian Caucus serves as a forum to exchange information, share concerns and make recommendations to CEC. The group publishes a newsletter and raises funds to support itself and help American Indian "Yes I Can!" Award winners.

Asian/Pacific Islander Caucus
The CEC Asian/Pacific Islander Caucus is a network of educators and researchers interested in advancing the education of Asian/Pacific Islander children with disabilities and supporting the professional advancement of Asian/Pacific Islander special educators and researchers. The Asian/Pacific Islander Caucus serves as a forum for pre-service students, faculty, researchers, educators, and administrators to exchange information, share concerns, and make recommendations to CEC. Black Caucus
The CEC Black Caucus is a network of educators interested in advancing the education of black children with disabilities and supporting the professional advancement of African American special educators. Educators with Disabilities Caucus
The Educators with Disabilities Caucus (EDC) is a national network of teachers with disabilities and persons interested in the topic of educators with disabilities. EDC serves as a forum for preservice students, faculty, educators, and administrators to exchange information on recruiting, hiring, and supporting teachers or related services personnel who have disabilities.

CEC’s Diversity Terminology
In April 2008, the Council’s Board of Directors approved updated diversity terms to be used in the CEC Policy Manual Glossary. CEC will infuse the new terminology into its strategic plan and its work. All CEC members and units are encouraged to embrace this new terminology and incorporate it into their work.
